Fabien rode his horse behind Sergine to a small village on the edge of the forest. The village lay behind a hill and was quite far from the usual route used by Elniri troops when they patrolled east from the town of Centraoux, so it was actually quite safe. Nevertheless, the frightened villagers had decided to leave two years ago and had fled to the north. The village was now deserted and without a single inhabitant.

Fabien continued to follow Sergine through the village until they finally arrived at a secluded house at the bottom of the hill. The two dismounted from their horses.

“Take our horses to the stables, Fabien, and keep our packs dry. It looks like it will rain soon.” Sergine looked at the dark clouds hanging in the sky, then headed toward the house.

Fabien led his horse and Sergine’s horse into the stables, which were not far from the house. He looked at the roof. It seemed in good condition, with no leaks. He tied the horses to a wooden post, took the big sacks off the horses’ backs, put them in the corner of the stables and covered them with a tarp.

When he came out of the stables, it had begun to rain. He quickly went into the house. Inside the house, he saw Sergine burning the fireplace. She had put her sword, bow, arrows and all her armor in a corner of the room and was now wearing only her white underwear.

“I hope the rain is short-lived,” Fabien said as he took off his shoulder armor and leather armor. “If it lasts too long, our plan could fail.”

Sergine walked over and brought Fabien a cup of hot tea. “Maybe. Maybe not,” she said, sitting down in a chair by the window as she watched the rain get heavier and heavier. “We’ll make adjustments if necessary. Or maybe not. Anthravai wouldn’t move his soldiers forward in this rain, either. Hopefully, the sun will shine tomorrow and the forest will dry out quickly.”

Fabien sat down next to her and enjoyed the hot tea. “You are always the calmest of knights, even in the most troubling times. Don’t you ever worry?”

Sergine grinned. “I never think about it. Maybe it’s because I’m the dumbest.”

“Nonsense. It’s because you’re the smartest.”

“We’ve made enough plans, Fabien. Now we just have to do it. What happens then is not up to us.”

Fabien nodded, thinking about those words.

“Are you afraid, Fabien?” Sergine asked suddenly.

Fabien took a deep breath before answering, “Yes, of course. I’m always afraid, I think.”

“That’s fine. Fear keeps you alert. So that’s good. But we need to control it.”

“What about you?”

“Only a fool doesn’t feel fear. But I think I’ve made my peace with it.” Then Sergine turned her head and smiled. “By the way, did you know that tomorrow is my birthday?”
